CRAIGSLIST SCAM
15 April, 2010 by Carolyn
Ok, so here is the latest scam. Someone posts a listing on Craigslist with a valid address and claims to have the house for rent at an extraordinarily low price. All you have to do is send the deposit to the 'seller' and they will hold the property for you! Sounds too good to be true? It IS!!
I've had several calls about a listing I have at 1025 Broadway Hanover, Pa. and was informed that it was showing on Craigslist for $850 month including utilities. They were told the property is vacant and they can have a look on the outside but since the seller is in "Egypt", "Africa" or some other random spot, they have the keys and documents with them on a Missionary trip- so as soon as they get your deposit they will send you the keys. Of course, they say if you don't like the home they will send your money back. Of course you know, you never get the keys- thus the scam.
It is hard enough to buy and sell a house nowadays without having these scams to contend with. I've had disappointed people calling me after they see that the real estate sign and my phone number and find out it's actually for SALE and the seller they e-mailed an application to is FAKE!
Please, do not fall for these. Craigslist admins should police their site a little more diligently and everyone else should know, if it sounds too good to be true- It probably is!
